Why Millennials Like Video Interviews (And You Should Too) - Spark Hire

Why Millennials Like Video Interviews (And You Should Too) - Spark HireIts no secret that Millennials (born between 1980 and 2000) are people who love their social media websites and technology. These individuals have grown up in a world of constant technological development and, thus, have an easier time adopting new technology into their daily lives. According to an infographic by Flowtown, 74 percent of Millennials believe that their lives are made easier with technology and 75 percent of Millennials have created a social networking profile. Video interviews, being technical in nature, deliver incredible benefits that appeal to job-seeking Millennials. Using just a webcam, Millennials can connect face-to-face with employers in real-time to discuss job opportunities. No travel required These Gen Y job candidates can also participate in one-way video interviews where they record video answers to an employers interview questions completely on their own time. They can do this using ei ther a webcam or their favorite mobile device.Video interviewing is the perfect tool for connecting with Millennials because it fulfills their need and want for real-time interaction in the interview process that requires less time than traditional methods. Video interviewing gives Millennials flexibility and convenience to go about their daily routines while also pursuing a job opportunity. Pre-recorded video interviews such as the one-way can be done when a Millennial has free time and their personal and current work schedule wont be disrupted. Furthermore, video interviews appeal to Millennials because they give them an opportunity to show their true character and engage with employers on a more personal level. Its also important to acknowledge that Millennials will soon dominate the workplace. A study by the University of North Carolinas Kenan-Flager Business School found that by 2020 Millennials will make up at least46 percent of the workforce. Another study done by the BPW Foun dation found that Millennials will make up roughly75 percent of the worlds workforce by 2025. Thus, its crucial for companies to begin utilizing video interviews in their interview process as soon as possible so as not to miss out on the influx of talented and skilled Millennial candidates.Additionally, employers shouldembrace technology such as video interviews to save themselves time. It takes an average of 45 days for a company to hire someone for a new position. By utilizing video interviews, employers can connect with Millennials more quickly so as to make an efficient hiring decision in less time. Millennials will also appreciate immediately hearing back from an employer whether they are hired or not.By using video interviews in the hiring process, employers are showing Millennials that their company culture values flexibility, convenience, and efficiency things Gen Y candidates value as well. Just as Millennials experience convenience from video interviews, employers can too . Neither party has to do much traveling in a live video interview because the connection is made via webcam usually, the candidate from their home and the employer from their office. With pre-recorded video interviews like the one-way, employers are able to view responses at a later time and even share them with colleagues for better collaboration in the hiring process.Video interviews give employers the opportunity to evaluate Millennial candidates on a more personal level than just reading their resume or viewing their Facebook and LinkedIn profile. If you really want to know whether a person will mesh well with your company culture, you have to see them beyond a piece of paper and virtual profile. Are you using video interviews to connect with Millennials? How to Find Meaning In Any Job

How to Find Meaning In Any JobHow to Find Meaning In Any Job According to the latest research, more than 50 percent of Millennials would give up part of their salary to work for a cause near and dear to their heart, and the majority (90 percent) want to use their skills for good. Unfortunately, job opportunities (and salaries) at non-profits make it difficult for everyone who wants to work for a cause to do so. But does that mean youre resigned to meaningless work forever? Nope As it turns out, any job can be turned into a meaningful work with the right attitude it just requires a shift in perspective. Whether you work in a service industry or a for-profit industry, if youre paid for your work, there is an end user who is receiving help from you. You simply need to think it through and focus on the person youre helping. For example, for a few years, I worked in web content writing and editing as a government contractor. As much as I loved my red pen, there were some days that were a little spreadsheet heavy, and Id find myself watching the clock for 5 PM. But one day, I realized the work I was doing wasnt just for a paycheck. At the end of the day, the content we were making and uploading to the government site truly made a difference in the lives of military families . What I was doing felt far removed from the reality of raising a family and running a household with a deployed spouse, but the result of my work was a direct hand up to people in that position. What a game changerWhile my job was somewhat service oriented, the principle works for almost any industry. If you work in IT security in banking , youre protecting entire populations of businesses and families from the stress, confusion, and long-term consequences of identity theft. If you work in retail, youre helping people find and purchase the things they need to manage their lives, from food and clothes to computer products and entertainment. What an impact As Marian Wrigh t Edelman says, Never work just for money or for power. They wont save your soul or help you sleep at night. If you find yourself driven to have a positive impact on the world, dont jump right to the conclusion that you need a new job. No matter what kind of job you have, its entirely within your power to make your work meaningful work right where you are.

U.S. Military Enlistment Process and Job Selection

U.S. Military Enlistment Process and Job SelectionU.S. Military Enlistment Process and Job SelectionEnlisting into the military should be a calling for young men and women to serve, not just a job to get if you have no other place to go. The military offers exceptional job training, educational benefits, paid vacation, and medical and dental care. Make sure you know what you want to do before you talk to a recruiter and drive the conversation and actions of the recruiter to what you want to do - as long as you qualify for it. Once the recruiter has determined your qualifications for enlistment (or got permission from his/her superiors to process you, in the event a waiver is required), youll start the enlistment process. Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) The first hurdle you must deal with is determining if you are medically qualified to join the military. The ball first gets rolling by the recruiter sending your forms and paperwork to MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station), where the real processing is done. The Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) While this test is usually accomplished at MEPS, it can also be done in high school. The ASVAB is used to determine what jobs you are academically eligible for. It is smart for you to take a month and do a few zugnglich practice ASVAB tests or get a book with practice tests and tips to score better. The reason you need to score well on the ASVAB as it may determine whether or not you get your number one choice of jobs after boot camp / basic training. There are three ways to take the Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude BatteryASVAB to qualify for military tafelgeschirr (and military job qualification). It can be taken in high school, ora paper version at MEPS, or in a computerized version at MEPS. The third option is the way most recruits take the ASVAB. The visit to MEPS is two-phased Part of the process does not belong to any individual service. Its a joint-service operation, that att empts to determine whether or not you are qualified for the military. This includes a medical examination and the testing (ASVAB, DLAB, etc.) portions of MEPS. Job Qualifications To get the job of your choice in the armed forces is not guaranteed. There has to be an available vacancy, and you have to be qualified.Job qualification is based on several factors. Most significant are your ASVAB line scores. The services have assignedminimum ASVABline scoresto each enlisted job. In addition to ASVAB line scores, many jobsrequire the applicant to qualify for asecurity clearance. If the applicant has anything in their background that may prevent approval of clearance, the MEPS job counselors are unlikely to allow the applicant to reserve that job. Some jobs require additional testing. For example, any job that requires one to learn a foreign language requires a passing score on theDefense Language Aptitude Battery (DLAB). Different jobs have different physical requirements. When one goe s through their medical examination at MEPS, one is assigned aPhysical Profile, which is a series of numbers that indicates the members medical condition in designated medical areas. In buchen to reserve a job, one must meet the minimum physical profile required for that job. Your recruiter should remind you and test you often if you are seeking some of the tougher programs in the military like Army Ranger / Special Forces, Navy SEAL / EOD / SWCC, kriegsmarine RECON, or Air Force PJ. However, if you seek Army or USMC Infantry, you need to prepare yourself for the challenges of after boot camp as well.Getting in shape prior to MEPS is critical for some of the Special Ops / Combat jobs. Each of the services has different policies/procedures when it comes to guaranteed jobs - often if you fail any of these tests prior to basic, you will lose your guaranteed slot. Jobs in the Army In the Army, anenlisted jobis called a MOS, or military occupational specialty. The Army is the only ser vice that offers a guaranteed job (MOS) to everyone, even though it might not be the exact one you want. It depends upon your qualifications and what jobs have current or projected openings. If the job you want is not available, your only choices are to choose a different job, or not enlist if there is nothing else you prefer to do in the Army. Jobs in the Air Force The Air Force calls itsenlisted jobsAir Force specialty codes (AFSC) The Air Force has two enlistment options Guaranteed Job, and Guaranteed Aptitude Area. Under the guaranteed job program, the applicant is guaranteed training in a specific Air Force job. Under the guaranteed aptitudeprogram, the applicant is guaranteed that he will be selected for a job that falls into one of the designated aptitude areas. The Air Force has divided all of their jobs intofour aptitude areas general, electronic, mechanical, and administrative. Because the Air Force has many more applicants than they have slots, it is very common for a n applicant to process through MEPS, and return enlisted in the delayed enlistment program without a reserved job-slot or shipping date. Instead, while at MEPS, they provide a list of job and aptitude area preferences to the job counselor, then they are placed on the qualified waiting list, for one of their preferences to become available. This can take several months. Its not uncommon, these days, for an Air Force applicant to remain in the DEP for 8 or more months before finally shipping out to basic training. In order to join the Air Force, one must be flexible with both job selections and dates of availability. For those with lots of flexibility, the Air Force has a program called the quick ship list. Every once in a while, an applicant with a reserved slot will drop out of the DEP at the last minute. The Air Force will allow applicants in the DEP to voluntarily put their name on the quick ship list to take the place of the applicant who dropped out. Be ready to go while in DEP as you can get the call to leave in less than a week in some cases. You do not have to go as they will offer the early slot to someone else, but getting another opportunity is hit or miss with some job specialties. Jobs in the Navy The Navy calls theirenlisted jobsratings. The Navy offers two programs guaranteed job, and undesignated seaman. The Navy also has some special enlistment programs whereby you can enlist knowing what area you are going into, but not your specific rating (job). Jobs in the Marines Like the Army, anenlisted jobin theMarine Corpsiscalled a MOS.The Marines also offertwo programs Guaranteed job, and general field. Very few Marine applicants get a guaranteed jobmostly those with college degrees or high ASVAB scores, applying for certain, designated technical specialties. Jobs in the Coast Guard Like the Navy, enlisted jobsin the Coast Guard are referred to as ratings. Of all of the services, the Coast Guard offers the fewest guaranteed jobs. One norma lly enlists in theCoast Guard, undesignated, then strikes for a job after a period of on-the-job training in basic coast-guardsman-ship at their first duty station. A few schools (and therefore jobs) are offered during basic training. As well as offering the fewest guaranteed jobs, the Coast Guard has the fewest overall jobs (about 23) of any of the services. On the plus side, for the most part, all of the Coast Guard jobs directly relate to a civilian occupation. Jobs in the Reserves and National Guard TheArmy National GuardandAir National Guard, as well as the reserve forces of all the branches, give guaranteed jobsto everyone who enlists. This is because unlike the active-duty forces, who recruit for available slots all over the world, the Guard and Reserves recruit for specific unit vacancies in their local areas. Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP) Once the job counselors have helped you determine yourjob/enlistment program youll sign an enlistment contract and take an oat h, enlisting you in the delayed enlistment program (DEP).The DEP is a holding status while you are waiting for your scheduled shipping date to basic training.

Ashley Furniture Home Stores

Ashley Furniture Home Stores Ashley Furniture Home Stores Ashley Furniture Home Stores Our goal is loftier than just making money. Jeffrey Zaffron is Managing Director of a licensing company that operates Ashley Furniture Home Stores in Western Texas and Eastern New Mexico. He employs more than 100 people who work in more than 175,000 feet of space in four stores. That area is larger than three football fields plenty of room to show off sofas and lamps. When you talk to Jeff, however, you get a sense that the key to his business is closeness to his parent corporation and to his customers. Keeping a focus on two relationships is vital to his success. On a large scale, the relationship between giant Ashley Furniture Industries, North Americas largest selling furniture manufacturer, and its licensees is closer than a typical supplier/retailer exchange. Ashley can use its size, design teams, manufacturing and long-haul trucking capabilities to lower costs for its store operators, so they can offer greater value at lower prices. Thats a prodigious advantage, but when it comes to hiring, another relationship matters more. On a small scale, Jeff Zaffron knows he must hire people who can build relationships over the long term with customers, especially in his competitive retail niche. Jeff explains: Were in smaller cities Lubbock is the largest at 250,000 people so finding people is always challenging. We look for the best and brightest people; they dont have to be from a furniture background. Selling and marketing are inherently about forming a relationship. If you have the ability to connect with a person, you can potentially be good in sales. There are other furniture stores, car dealers, and many other venues where people with transferable skills like sales can find work, so its competitive. Our difference is that we want people who understand that our purpose is to help people. Our goal is loftier than just making money. Help people? A furniture store? We live where we work, continues Jeff. West Texas and Eastern New Mexico have tight-knit communities, and we pride ourselves on service before, during and after the sale. Sales consultants greet customers at the door, offer bottled water if its hot outside, and answer questions with high product knowledge: If a customer has a question about the mechanism on a reclining sofa, sales consultants can answer without referring to a book in the back room. We also believe wholeheartedly that we need to be good corporate citizens; we need to be a good part of the community, rather than a big, impersonal furniture store. We have our own events here like rock walls for the kids on certain days, or philanthropic activities. Its about making Lubbock or Amarillo or Hobbes a better place. Whats a Porter? Where in West Texas will you hire a porter? Where will you find a visual merchandiser? For that matter, what do they do? They set the scene, and everything follows from that. Walk into an Ashley HomeStore and you wont find a sea of sofas. Instead, the stores contain many small, fully furnished rooms called vignettes. In the vignettes, the sofa, love seat, cocktail table, lamps, end tables, rugs, artworkeverything is carefully designed by a visual merchandiser who decorates and re-decorates under the watchful eye of Jeffs director of visual design (a job that merges marketing and interior design). Porters are the people who arrange and maintain these rooms. The effect is to inspire customers; to have them walk into a vignette and say, Oh yes! Thats what Im looking for! Hire for Growth Relationship-building is a transferable skill, which means Jeff faces competition for talent outside his industry (from car dealers and other retailers). He attracts the best candidates with potential growth opportunities. For example, he says, We opened a new store in Hobbs New Mexico, which is experiencing explosive growth. Advertising on brought us dozens of candidates for individual positions who also had crossover potential. We were able to take someone who applied for a sales managers job in Hobbs NM and match them up with a store manger, sales manager, or operations manager job in another store as well. Im looking for people who can grow within our organization, and that becomes a long term relationship too. Hiring Tip from Jeff Zaffron Think of reading resumes and interviewing as an intelligence-gathering activity. Take your time until you find a person who really understands what the goal is. A marketing person has to swing the door and a sales person has to close the sale, but when youre operating in a close, tight-knit community like us, you actually need people who want to do right by themselves, their families and their neighbors.

Why Follow-Up Can Make or Break Your Job Search

Why Follow-Up Can Make or Break Your Job Search Why Follow-Up Can Make or Break Your Job Search You’ve spent several hours crafting the perfect pitch to a potential client you met at a conference, clicked send on your email, and then waited expectantly for a response. None comes. Do you give up, or follow up? If you want to increase your chances of landing the gig, then you’ll overcome your fear of rejection and reach out again with a polite follow-up. While it takes some gumption to make yourself vulnerable with a second communication after you’ve already applied to a job or appealed to a professional contact for help, learning the art of following up on your initial pitches is critical to your job search. Here are some tips on how follow up diplomatically and appropriately, regardless of what type of opportunity you’re courting: Find the happy medium. Effective follow-up during a job search or pitch for a gig is more art than science. Your goal is to find the middle ground between too much follow-up and too little. On the one hand, you want to avoid appearing desperate or needy- for example, by not allowing enough time to pass (think an hour or day) before you inquire about your original pitch. But you also don’t want to wait so long to follow up that the recipient of your message has forgotten who you are and what job or project you’re talking about. Once a reasonable amount of time has passed between your first communication, it’s okay to put out a feeler and request a status check about your application or ask if your email proposal is under consideration. What’s “reasonable” in terms of timing may vary depending on the circumstances and situation, but in general, give people at least a week to respond before anxiously circling back to them. Don’t wait more than a month to do it, though. Let go of the guilt. Do you feel like you’re “bugging people” by following up with a prospect? Don’t sabotage your potential success by being overly worried about bothering others with an appropriate follow-up. Whether you’re trying to land a new client or new job, sometimes recruiters or hiring managers just need to be reminded about who you are for your resume to rise to the top of their crowded inbox. Keep in mind that employers are juggling dozens or even hundreds of candidates as they consider their options, usually while also doing their own job. A well-timed and polite follow-up note under the right circumstances- for example, after you’ve met with the hiring team for an interview- can help brand your offering in their mind and might help you make a lasting impact. Consider the starting point. Not all job search situations require the same type of follow-up. If you run your own business and responded to an initial inquiry about your services from a potential new client but then got the silent treatment, don’t assume that you said something wrong or that the prospect isn’t interested. Since the person requested information about gaining assistance in your area of expertise, he or she may simply be too overwhelmed to be checking every message and may welcome the chance to see your fresh email come through offering help again. On the other hand, if you applied for a job using an applicant tracking system on a corporate website, then there may be no actual person to follow up with. In this case, wasting too much time and energy crafting follow-up responses may prove to be a waste of time, since you’ll have no way to know whether anyone actually received them. Follow-up can make you feel nervous, but it’s worth fighting through your jitters to keep communication lines open with potential employers. You never know if that follow-up note or email will be the one that opens the door to something you’ve worked hard on the front end to get. Know someone looking for a job? 6 Ways to Immediately Filter Bad Resumes

6 Ways to Immediately Filter Bad Resumes 6 Ways to Immediately Filter Bad Resumes Welcome to Recruiter QA, where we pose employment-related questions to the experts and share their answers! Have a question you’d like to ask? Leave it in the comments, and you might just see it in the next installment of Recruiter QA! Todays Question: How do you efficiently wade through the sea of resumes you receive for any given job posting? The answers below are provided by members of FounderSociety, an invitation-only organization comprised of ambitious startup founders and business owners. 1. Decide Whether You Can Learn Something From Each Candidate I first have the person who is going to be working closely with the new hire go through the pile of resumes and weed out anyone who doesnt meet the basic criteria. Then, I have them go through it again and pull out people they think they can learn something from. That usually makes the pile a lot shorter. - Jessica Baker, Aligned Signs 2. Ask the Top 10 Candidates to Work on a Short Assignment At Kuli Kuli, we find that we can weed out a lot of people by asking them to complete a short work assignment related to the task theyd be performing at our company. For example, if they will be in communications, we ask them to write a short blog post. Not everyone responds to this request, which makes it easy to see who is serious about the job and who has the potential to be great at it. - Lisa Curtis, Kuli Kuli 3. Sync Resumes With LinkedIn Whether you are collecting resumes through paper submissions or online PDF applications, a great method of wading through the mess is to make sure each resume includes a link to the candidates LinkedIn profile page. LinkedIn offers a great way to see how other individuals rate and recommend each candidate. This information can go a long way when trying to choose new hires from a large selection of unknowns. - Zac Johnson, Blogging.org 4. Say Goodbye to Buzzwords The first thing I do is skim for buzzwords. Nonsense like best of breed, results-driven, and seasoned will get an application tossed in the trash without a second thought. I then do a second skim, looking for experience relevant to the position. Finally, I look at whats left, and pick a few of the highest-quality applicants to contact. - Steven Buchwald, Buchwald Associates 5. Iterate Effectively Start by removing the folks who are not a good fit off the bat. Some candidates will obviously not have the right credentials or experience. After quickly going through all of the candidates, you will have a good sense of what the talent pool looks like, and you can determine which criteria you can be pickier with. Do another pass using the criteria you chose, and continue this process until only a few resumes remain. - John Arroyo, Arroyo Labs, Inc. 6. Figure Out Who You Can Immediately Remove From Consideration Its a no-brainer, but toss the resumes that dont meet your basic criteria the ones that dont have required skills or those that demand too much money, for example. Then, you can remove those with additional skills that are incorrect, like Ruby for a PHP position or logistics for a marketer. Fewer skills means more focus and less cost. There is only so much time. The right person needs to be there ASAP. - Ben Gamble, Quincus

Pros and Cons of Company Size

Pros and Cons of Company Size Pros and Cons of Company Size When you consider company size, and which one offers the best of everything - from salaries and benefits to technology and advancement opportunities - larger organizations tend to come to mind first. But for accounting professionals, one size does not fit all. Small, midsize and large firms all have their advantages and disadvantages. This quick guide will give you an idea of some of the pros and cons of working for employers of each company size: Pros and cons of working for large organizations Pros: Generally speaking, larger firms offer higher starting salaries and more extensive perks and benefits, such as better health insurance plans or childcare options. Lateral movement is also more of a possibility at bigger companies. If at some point you’re looking to transfer to another department - or even to another city or country - a larger company will be more likely to have something suitable for you. Moreover, if you want access to the most current accounting software, a big firm is likely to have it. Cons: It’s easier to get lost in the shuffle. You may also have to get approval from several levels of management before implementing new processes. Additionally, when it comes time for promotions, more coworkers will be competing with you to move up. Want to compare salary ranges at small, midsize and large companies? Download our  2018 Robert Half Salary Guide  for detailed salary information. How about midsize organizations? Pros: Midsize firms are more likely than smaller firms to have updated technology and accounting systems, and some provide employees the potential for lateral career moves. You may also be part of a tighter-knit group of coworkers than you would be if you were at a larger firm. Midsize organizations may also offer employees more flexible work options and a bit more autonomy than larger companies do, as the chain of command is shorter. Cons: Most midsize firms won’t be able to compete with the salary and benefits - or the prestige - of bigger organizations. Advantages, disadvantages of small organizations Pros: Many smaller firms have a family feel, and that can be more important to some employees than a high pay scale or top-line benefits. It’s also commonplace for staff members to don multiple caps throughout the day, meaning you could gain experience in areas of accounting that would be outside your purview at a larger firm. Cons: If you’re looking for professional development opportunities such as tuition matches or reimbursement for certification exam fees and professional memberships, you're less likely to find them here. In addition, your tech offerings are likely to be limited, and you may have to coordinate your time off around colleagues to avoid short-staffing the office. Also, if you're interested in remote work, 68 percent of CFOs at companies with more than 1,000 employees see remote work opportunities on the rise - double the percentage of CFOs at companies with 20 to 49 employees (34 percent). The Best Day to Send Your Resume

The Best Day to Send Your Resume The Best Day to Send Your Resume As if finding your dream job wasn’t hard enough, it can seem that once you send your email and cover letter to a potential employer, it disappears into a black hole in cyber space. With the exception of an automated email response, which appears almost immediately thanking you for applying and saying something about getting back to you if you’re a good fit, it can feel as though you have to be on “the inside” to get noticed, let alone an interview. But there are tricks, such as using the best day to send your resume as your job search day! For many, the lack of response can be maddening. We’ve all been there, constantly checking our email every hour and experiencing a glimmer of hope with every ping, only to discover a friend has forwarded yet another silly cat video. At times you may even find yourself looking for something of a scientific formula to nab an interview and wondering things like, “What is the best day to send your resume?” “Should I send it in the morning or afternoon?” “Should I follow up with a resume I’ve already sent?” and “How many other candidates are applying?” Whether it’s scientific or statistic, there are definite answers to these questions that may just help you get your email read, your phone calls returned, and your foot in the door. When is the best day to send your resume? You’ve spent hours putting your resume together and crafting the perfect cover letter, so it makes sense that you want to send it as quickly as possible. Besides, the sooner you get your resume in, the faster your chances of beating the next candidate…right? Wrong! In a world driven by technology and communication, we all tend to follow the school of thought that faster is better. However, when it comes to success in applying for a job, the more time and thought you put into your application process, the better. According to Dee Thomas, a top recruiter at a popular staffing company in New York City, you should never apply for a job on a Friday. She says, “Recruiters, hiring managers, and human resource professionals are human too. We are guilty of checking out and thinking about the weekend by 2pm on Friday just as the next person. So, it is in your best interest to never submit your resume on a Friday, and especially never on a Friday afternoon. No one will see it and, when Monday comes and they sit down to check emails, yours will be at the very bottom of the queue.” Research has shown that the best day to send your resume is on Monday- as early as possible. Your resume will be on the top of the pile and the chances of getting noticed are much higher. In fact, a recent study done by LinkedIn showed that on more than half a million job submissions, almost one out of every three people who applied on a Monday were the most successful in moving forward. So, while the question of “How many other candidates have applied?” may be on your mind, it probably doesn’t matter. Your chances of bypassing the competition is greater if you wait and apply on Monday morning. Jacob Bollinger, a senior analyst at LinkedIn, believes that it’s the Monday applications that are more likely to be perused simply because the workweek is fresh. Resumes are inclined to pile up as the week goes on. Ms. Thomas suggests that if you do decide to apply Tuesday through Thursday, try to submit your resume from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You won’t be ignored by the morning rush and reading resumes is often a fun activity for employers as they are letting their lunch settle. Thomas says, “I know of many employers who find that reading candidate emails and resumes after lunch is a nice break before the afternoon meetings kick in.” How can I get my resume noticed? While the thought of bringing back the singing telegram or mailing in your resume on neon green paper may feel like your only hope of getting noticed, there are actually some creative, and less embarrassing, ways to catch a hiring manager’s eye. The following are a few tips for standing out: You can’t send a cookie cutter resume to 15 different jobs, even if they are all in the same industry. You need to read each job description closely and compare the language to what is on your resume. Be as detailed as possible, without being wordy, so the hiring manager sees how you fit into the specific position. Your cover letter should reflect your understanding of the role and precisely why your experience and background make you a perfect fit. Keep the letter short and straight to the point. Have references available. Many people think that references need to be their bosses from their previous jobs. That is not always the case. If you worked in a team, had more than one manager, had a good relationship with human resources, or even a friend with a high position at the company who knew your capabilities, all of them can be solid references. How many others are applying? It’s already been said that you shouldn’t worry about that as long as you get your resume on the top of the pile on Monday morning; however, if you’re like most people, you’re still wondering. Whether the post has been up three months, or three days, understanding something known as the recruiting “hiring funnel” can help you gauge your chances. According to a popular job searching website, on average, 1,000 individuals will see a job post, 200 will begin the application process, but only 100 will complete the process. Out of those 100, a whopping 75 will be screened out for a variety of reasons from invalid email address to completely wrong fit. Twenty-five resumes will be seen by a hiring manager and a lucky four to six will be called for an interview. One to three will be invited back for a final interview and the one person who will receive a job offer accepts it 80 percent of the time. While the numbers may seem big, your chances of getting a call back are actually better than you may think. From knowing what to put on your resume, to what day to send it out, following the above guidelines can make the job hunt much easier. Taking the guesswork out of applying for a job can be an excellent confident booster and help you land the gig. Readers, did you know that Monday was the best day to send your resume? When do you normally send yours out? Will you change your process, or have you had success with other days? Share with us below!
