Instead, while at MEPS, they provide a list of job and aptitude area preferences to the job counselor, then they are placed on the qualified waiting list, for one of their preferences to become available. This can take several months. Its not uncommon, these days, for an Air Force applicant to remain in the DEP for 8 or more months before finally shipping out to basic training. In order to join the Air Force, one must be flexible with both job selections and dates of availability. For those with lots of flexibility, the Air Force has a program called the quick ship list. Every once in a while, an applicant with a reserved slot will drop out of the DEP at the last minute. The Air Force will allow applicants in the DEP to voluntarily put their name on the quick ship list to take the place of the applicant who dropped out. Be ready to go while in DEP as you can get the call to leave in less than a week in some cases. You do not have to go as they will offer the early slot to someone else, but getting another opportunity is hit or miss with some job specialties. Jobs in the Navy The Navy calls theirenlisted jobsratings. The Navy offers two programs guaranteed job, and undesignated seaman. The Navy also has some special enlistment programs whereby you can enlist knowing what area you are going into, but not your specific rating (job). Jobs in the Marines Like the Army,anenlisted jobin theMarine Corpsiscalled a MOS.The Marines also offertwo programs Guaranteed job, and general field. Very few Marine applicants get a guaranteed jobmostly those with college degrees or high ASVAB scores, applying for certain, designated technical specialties. Jobs in the Coast Guard Like the Navy,enlisted jobsin the Coast Guard are referred to as ratings. Of all of the services, the Coast Guard offers the fewest guaranteed jobs. One norma lly enlists in theCoast Guard, undesignated, then strikes for a job after a period of on-the-job training in basic coast-guardsman-ship at their first duty station. A few schools (and therefore jobs) are offered during basic training. As well as offering the fewest guaranteed jobs, the Coast Guard has the fewest overall jobs (about 23) of any of the services. On the plus side, for the most part, all of the Coast Guard jobs directly relate to a civilian occupation. None comes. Do you give up, or follow up? If you want to increase your chances of landing the gig, then you’ll overcome your fear of rejection and reach out again with a polite follow-up. While it takes some gumption to make yourself vulnerable with a second communication after you’ve already applied to a job or appealed to a professional contact for help, learning the art of following up on your initial pitches is critical to your job search. Here are some tips on how follow up diplomatically and appropriately, regardless of what type of opportunity you’re courting: Find the happy medium. Effective follow-up during a job search or pitch for a gig is more art than science. Your goal is to find the middle ground between too much follow-up and too little. On the one hand, you want to avoid appearing desperate or needy- for example, by not allowing enough time to pass (think an hour or day) before you inquire about your original pitch. But you also don’t want to wait so long to follow up that the recipient of your message has forgotten who you are and what job or project you’re talking about. Once a reasonable amount of time has passed between your first communication, it’s okay to put out a feeler and request a status check about your application or ask if your email proposal is under consideration. What’s “reasonable” in terms of timing may vary depending on the circumstances and situation, but in general, give people at least a week to respond before anxiously circling back to them. Don’t wait more than a month to do it, though. Let go of the guilt. Do you feel like you’re “bugging people” by following up with a prospect? Don’t sabotage your potential success by being overly worried about bothering others with an appropriate follow-up. Whether you’re trying to land a new client or new job, sometimes recruiters or hiring managers just need to be reminded about who you are for your resume to rise to the top of their crowded inbox. Keep in mind that employers are juggling dozens or even hundreds of candidates as they consider their options, usually while also doing their own job. A well-timed and polite follow-up note under the right circumstances- for example, after you’ve met with the hiring team for an interview- can help brand your offering in their mind and might help you make a lasting impact. Consider the starting point. Not all job search situations require the same type of follow-up. If you run your own business and responded to an initial inquiry about your services from a potential new client but then got the silent treatment, don’t assume that you said something wrong or that the prospect isn’t interested. Since the person requested information about gaining assistance in your area of expertise, he or she may simply be too overwhelmed to be checking every message and may welcome the chance to see your fresh email come through offering help again. On the other hand, if you applied for a job using an applicant tracking system on a corporate website, then there may be no actual person to follow up with. In this case, wasting too much time and energy crafting follow-up responses may prove to be a waste of time, since you’ll have no way to know whether anyone actually received them. Follow-up can make you feel nervous, but it’s worth fighting through your jitters to keep communication lines open with potential employers. But for accounting professionals, one size does not fit all. Small, midsize and large firms all have their advantages and disadvantages. This quick guide will give you an idea of some of the pros and cons of working for employers of each company size: Pros and cons of working for large organizations Pros: Generally speaking, larger firms offer higher starting salaries and more extensive perks and benefits, such as better health insurance plans or childcare options. Lateral movement is also more of a possibility at bigger companies. If at some point you’re looking to transfer to another department - or even to another city or country - a larger company will be more likely to have something suitable for you. The Best Day to Send Your Resume The Best Day to Send Your Resume As if finding your dream job wasn’t hard enough, it can seem that once you send your email and cover letter to a potential employer, it disappears into a black hole in cyber space. With the exception of an automated email response, which appears almost immediately thanking you for applying and saying something about getting back to you if you’re a good fit, it can feel as though you have to be on “the inside” to get noticed, let alone an interview. But there are tricks, such as using the best day to send your resume as your job search day! For many, the lack of response can be maddening. We’ve all been there, constantly checking our email every hour and experiencing a glimmer of hope with every ping, only to discover a friend has forwarded yet another silly cat video. At times you may even find yourself looking for something of a scientific formula to nab an interview and wondering things like, “What is the best day to send your resume?” “Should I send it in the morning or afternoon?” “Should I follow up with a resume I’ve already sent?” and “How many other candidates are applying?” Whether it’s scientific or statistic, there are definite answers to these questions that may just help you get your email read, your phone calls returned, and your foot in the door. When is the best day to send your resume? You’ve spent hours putting your resume together and crafting the perfect cover letter, so it makes sense that you want to send it as quickly as possible. Besides, the sooner you get your resume in, the faster your chances of beating the next candidate…right? Wrong! In a world driven by technology and communication, we all tend to follow the school of thought that faster is better. However, when it comes to success in applying for a job, the more time and thought you put into your application process, the better. According to Dee Thomas, a top recruiter at a popular staffing company in New York City, you should never apply for a job on a Friday. She says, “Recruiters, hiring managers, and human resource professionals are human too. We are guilty of checking out and thinking about the weekend by 2pm on Friday just as the next person. So, it is in your best interest to never submit your resume on a Friday, and especially never on a Friday afternoon. No one will see it and, when Monday comes and they sit down to check emails, yours will be at the very bottom of the queue.” Research has shown that the best day to send your resume is on Monday- as early as possible. Your resume will be on the top of the pile and the chances of getting noticed are much higher. In fact, a recent study done by LinkedIn showed that on more than half a million job submissions, almost one out of every three people who applied on a Monday were the most successful in moving forward. So, while the question of “How many other candidates have applied?” may be on your mind, it probably doesn’t matter. Your chances of bypassing the competition is greater if you wait and apply on Monday morning. Jacob Bollinger, a senior analyst at LinkedIn, believes that it’s the Monday applications that are more likely to be perused simply because the workweek is fresh. Resumes are inclined to pile up as the week goes on. Ms. Thomas suggests that if you do decide to apply Tuesday through Thursday, try to submit your resume from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You won’t be ignored by the morning rush and reading resumes is often a fun activity for employers as they are letting their lunch settle. Thomas says, “I know of many employers who find that reading candidate emails and resumes after lunch is a nice break before the afternoon meetings kick in.” How can I get my resume noticed? While the thought of bringing back the singing telegram or mailing in your resume on neon green paper may feel like your only hope of getting noticed, there are actually some creative, and less embarrassing, ways to catch a hiring manager’s eye. The following are a few tips for standing out: You can’t send a cookie cutter resume to 15 different jobs, even if they are all in the same industry. You need to read each job description closely and compare the language to what is on your resume. Be as detailed as possible, without being wordy, so the hiring manager sees how you fit into the specific position. Your cover letter should reflect your understanding of the role and precisely why your experience and background make you a perfect fit. Keep the letter short and straight to the point. Have references available. Many people think that references need to be their bosses from their previous jobs. That is not always the case. If you worked in a team, had more than one manager, had a good relationship with human resources, or even a friend with a high position at the company who knew your capabilities, all of them can be solid references. How many others are applying? It’s already been said that you shouldn’t worry about that as long as you get your resume on the top of the pile on Monday morning; however, if you’re like most people, you’re still wondering. Whether the post has been up three months, or three days, understanding something known as the recruiting “hiring funnel” can help you gauge your chances. According to a popular job searching website, on average, 1,000 individuals will see a job post, 200 will begin the application process, but only 100 will complete the process. Out of those 100, a whopping 75 will be screened out for a variety of reasons from invalid email address to completely wrong fit. Twenty-five resumes will be seen by a hiring manager and a lucky four to six will be called for an interview. One to three will be invited back for a final interview and the one person who will receive a job offer accepts it 80 percent of the time. While the numbers may seem big, your chances of getting a call back are actually better than you may think. From knowing what to put on your resume, to what day to send it out, following the above guidelines can make the job hunt much easier. Job alerts will email you  job listings that meet your search criteria, as soon as they are posted,  enabling you to get your application in early. You can set up alerts based on your search queries, so the jobs you get will match the types of positions and companies you’re looking for. Once the alert is in place, youll receive an email message notifying you when new jobs are posted. Job alerts will also  save  you time because you wont have to go back to the website and search as often. That said, its still a good idea to search Indeed.com manually a few times a week, so youre sure that you havent missed any relevant job postings. Heres information on how to set up a job alert on Indeed.com, how to edit or change your alerts, and how to delete alerts if you no longer want to receive them. The process will be similar on other job sites. You’ll need to register first, then sign up for alerts for the job postings you’re interested in. How to Set Up Indeed.com Job Alerts Youll need to register  an account on Indeed.com, or you can log in with your Facebook or Google account to set up email job alerts. Register or Sign In to Indeed. Then search for jobs by job title, keywords, company name, or  by  the location where you want to work. When you get the search results, click on “Get new jobs for this search by email” on the right side of the page next to the envelope. You will now see Job alerts active”  displayed. You can also sign up to receive email messages from Indeed, with jobs recommended for you. Once the alert is set up, you will receive a once-a-day notification of new job openings by email. Click on “Job alerts active” to edit, pause or delete your alert. You will also be able to add alerts for additional search terms and/or locations. The Indeed mobile app can also be used to set up alerts and push notifications. How to Edit Indeed Job Alerts If youre not getting the right types of jobs or you want to change the frequency of your alerts, you can edit them. You will need to be signed in on Indeed  and then click on “Job alerts active” to see a list of your job alerts. Click on “edit” next to the alert to change it. Options to change include: What (job title, keywords, or company name)Where (city, state, or zip)When (daily or weekly emails)Cancel (to go back to the previous screen and not change your alert) If youre actively job searching, its a good idea to get daily alerts so you wont be delayed in applying for jobs. If you get them weekly, the jobs could be filled by the time you apply. Confirming Your Alerts For each alert you set up, youll receive an email confirmation from Indeed. Click on the link in the email message to activate your alert. How to Add New Job Alerts If you want to receive alerts for different types of jobs, log in to Indeed and go to the drop-down menu in the upper right corner. Select Alerts from the dropdown, which will bring you to the page where you can manage all of your alerts.Under “Create an email job alert” enter the keywords (what) and location (where) for  which  you want to receive job listings. You can also select a radius of miles around the city you selected.Click “Create alert” and youre done. Upload Your Resume to Apply Quickly You can speed up the application  process even more by uploading your resume to Indeed. There’s also an option for creating a new resume from scratch on the site. The more tools you take advantage of, the easier it will be to get hired quickly, so make sure you’re getting the most of out of the site to expedite your job search. Beware of Junk Mail Filters Theres one more step to ensure you receive your email job alerts. Add “alertindeed.com” as a safe sender for any spam blocking software you use, so your alerts dont end up in your junk email or spam folders. How to Pause or Delete Indeed Job Alerts and Your Account When you have found a job or changed the type of position youre seeking, its easy to change your settings. Login to Indeed and click on “Job alerts active.” Next to each alert, youll see “edit - pause - delete.” Click on “pause” to temporarily stop the alert. Click on “delete” to permanently stop the alert. If you want to turn a paused alert back on, click on “resume.” If you want to delete your Indeed account, in addition to stopping job alerts, you may see an option to Close My Account” when you login. Other options including temporarily pausing your alerts or setting your resume to private. If you cant view these options, contact Indeed Customer Support for assistance.
